A few years ago, I was introduced to One Little Word® – the idea of finding one word to focus on throughout the year. In the past, I’ve selected words like ABUNDANCE and GRATITUDE, and they’ve been great.
As 2025 dawns, I’m ready for a word with a bit more muscle. For this year, my one little word is ACTION. Something about being in my sixth decade of life has pushed me beyond plans, desires, and intentions. It’s time to make things happen.
How often do I think about sending a card to someone who’s been on my mind, but I never actually send it? How easy is it to recognize problems but learn to live with them? (Hello, clutter.) How many dreams lie dormant because fear or distraction or fatigue throws up a roadblock? This year, every intention, every problem, every dream will be filtered through the lens of ACTION.
Maybe you need to take some ACTION as well. Here’s a list of ideas that might inspire you:
Thinking about learning to play the ukulele? Here’s a free 10-day starter course from Andy Guitar to get you started. (As the name suggests, he also has a free 10-day guitar starter course if that’s more your speed.)
Feeling like a little low-pressure yoga practice might help you become stronger, more flexible, and more mindful? Make Yoga With Adriene part of your routine.
Do you need motivation to read more? Join a book club. Or better yet, start your own book club!
Would your neighborhood benefit from a Little Free Library? You can be the one to make this happen!
Want your kids to become readers? (This is a rhetorical question. Of course you do!) The American Academy of Pediatrics has a great list of actions you can take.
Are you short-changing yourself on the essential practice of sleep? The Mayo Clinic has some suggestions about what you can do to fix this problem.
Thinking about coming up with your own One Little Word® for the year? Visit Ali Edwards’ website to learn more.
Looking for ways to be healthier? Take ACTION. Buy good food, go for walks, and get some rest. Recognizing a need to reduce screen time? Take ACTION. Put the device away and substitute a screen-free activity like gardening, playing cards with friends, joining a pickle ball club, or reading a book.
What do you truly desire? Who do you want to become? What’s your vision for a better life, a better community, a better world? Maybe it’s time for you to take ACTION.
Last year brought changes and challenges to my family. There was a lot of waiting. A lot of transition. A lot of ambiguity about the future. Many dreams and plans were unavoidably put on hold. But this year, we are back on track, and maybe that’s why I’m so ready for ACTION.
One of my first acts was to restart my SKW blog. Taking this ACTION each month is something I will do, and I hope you’ll join me by reading along. Thanks for being part of this first post of 2025. I hope you’ve been inspired to take ACTION!
